Mental Health Coaching IS:

A partnership focused on the present and future. Coaches work with clients to define and achieve specific goals, such as managing stress, improving work-life balance, or building resilience.

A practice that uses evidence-based techniques. Mental health coaches often use strategies from therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness, but they apply them in a non-clinical, coaching context to help clients develop practical skills.

Focused on skill development and self-efficacy. Coaching helps you learn and practice coping strategies, communication skills, and other tools that empower you to take charge of your own mental wellness.

Support for personal and professional growth. It's suitable for people who are generally well and seeking to enhance their performance, navigate life transitions, or improve their overall quality of life.

An accountability-based relationship. Coaches hold clients accountable for their action plans and goals, providing encouragement and structure to help them stay on track and create lasting change.
Mental Health Coaching is NOT:

Therapy or counseling. Coaches are not licensed therapists. They do not diagnose, treat, or address deep-seated mental illnesses, past trauma, or complex psychological disorders.

A substitute for professional medical care. If you have significant mental health issues like severe depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, or a substance use disorder, a mental health coach is not the right fit. These conditions require the expertise of a licensed mental health professional.

Focused on the past. While a coach might briefly touch on past experiences to gain context, the primary focus is not on healing old wounds. Instead, it's on moving forward and creating a better future.

Medication management. Mental health coaches cannot prescribe medication or provide advice regarding psychiatric medications. That is the role of a psychiatrist or other medical doctor.

A quick fix. Coaching is not about giving you all the answers. It's a process that requires your active participation and commitment to making sustainable changes over time.
